Dr Stuart Carr

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system, which protects you against harmful invaders, overreacts to a usually harmless substance in the environment such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. These usually harmless substances are called “allergens”. Allergens may enter your system by being inhaled, touched, ingested, or injected. Allergies exist in many different forms: Allergy symptoms vary depending on the type of allergens and can range from minor to severe. Some of these symptoms include:
  • Cough
  • Chest tightness and shortness of breath
  • Dry, itchy, cracked, scaly skin
  • Feeling faint or light-headed.
  • Inflamed, itchy eyes
  • Itchy, runny nose
  • Rashes/ Hives (red, very itchy swellings)
  • Sneezing
  • Stomach pain/ vomiting/ diarrhea
  • Swollen lips/ tongue/ throat
  • Wheezing
There is no cure for allergies but there are effective treatments available to reduce its symptoms and improve your quality of life. Prevention and management of allergies also begin with a correct medical diagnosis. All of these we offer at our snö wellness.
A child with a persistent cough that lasts for weeks, who frequently develops an itchy rash or hives, or who gets a stomach pain and feels dizzy after eating certain food may need to see a specialist as these are warning signs of childhood allergies. Allergies and asthma often start in childhood and continue throughout life. They tend to be hereditary, making children with one or both parents with allergies more likely to develop these conditions. Among the most common triggers in children are food (such as milk, egg, grains, nuts and legumes) and environmental allergens like pollen, pets, dust mites and moulds. In a country like the UAE, the soaring temperatures and high humidity provides a favourable environment for dust mites and moulds to thrive. The dusty environment also leads to an increase in inhaled sand particles that could be an important trigger for people with asthma. Allergies in children can cause physical discomfort, exercise limitation, and poor sleep quality, affect behaviour and compromise their health and development. If you believe your child may have allergies or asthma, it is very important to seek the right medical help for diagnosis and treatments. Our Asthma & Allergy Specialists evaluate and treat children with many allergic disorders including:
  • Asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Seasonal allergies (tree, grass and weed pollen)
  • Food allergies
  • Pet allergies
  • Hives (red, very itchy swellings/ mosquito-bite like symptoms)
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Eczema, atopic dermatitis
  • Insect sting allergy
  • Sinusitis
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Latex and drug allergies
Early identification and appropriate treatment of asthma and allergies will help minimize symptoms, normalize your child’s daily activities, decrease the risk for any life-threatening reactions and importantly, improve their quality of life. Our team of experts have extensive experience with children’s asthma and allergies and are here to make sure that your child is cared for in the most appropriate and safe healthcare facility.
