Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes red, itchy, and inflamed patches on the skin. It often leads to extremely dry areas that, when scratched, may ooze or bleed. This condition is common in children but can affect people of all ages.
Eczema is usually caused by a mix of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. While allergies can worsen eczema symptoms, they are not the direct cause. Interestingly, research suggests that having eczema may actually increase the risk of developing allergies. Most cases are inherited due to a defect in the skin’s barrier, leading to increased water loss and inflammation.
Though there’s no cure, treatments aim to repair damaged skin and reduce flare-ups. Many children eventually outgrow eczema, and there’s hope that it may be preventable in infants at higher risk.
