Eating Disorders
These psychiatric disorders are disturbances related to body image and eating. These conditions involve an excessive/unhealthy focus on weight or body shape that result in disordered eating patterns in connection with specific recurring negative thoughts and maladaptive behaviours. The most common eating disorders are:
- Anorexia nervosa: Involves food restriction that results in a very low body weight.
- Bulimia nervosa: Involve binge eating followed by extreme methods to compensate for excessive calorie intake such as vomiting, excessive exercise, and laxative abuse.
- Binge eating disorder: Involves consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time.
